In my last blog post I highlighted the three most important elements that determine your website’s organic visibility in search engines. They are: Links, Keywords and Tags.

I will be covering Link Building and choosing the right Keywords later.

SEO Tags are an important tool for optimizing your website. These three SEO Tags are the most important:

1) Title tag

When a search engine spider indexes your website, the title tag gives top-line information about the content on that specific page. The words you use in the title tags are of great importance for ranking your page in search engines. The title tag also appears in the search engine result page.

2) Meta description

The keywords in the meta description are not used for ranking your page in search engine results. But they do show up in Google, right under your title tag. The meta description informs the user of the content of the page. It’s of great importance for click-thru!

3) Headings (h1, h2, h3, et al)

Headings are a great tool for winning the battle on certain keywords and phrases. Your h1, h2, h3’s (and so forth) are basically little sign posts within a page. They tell Google something about the context and hierarchy of the content on a certain page.

That’s it?

Like I said, there are lots more tags, elements and attributes, but if you want to get a handle on SEO yourself, the ones mentioned here are a good place to start.

In my next post, I will be talking about how you can check for yourself if your site is optimized for search engines!

PS –  Please note that my posts are mostly based on the search engine Google, since this search engine currently has a market share of more than 90%. However, most basic rules apply to all search engines.
